2018-01-12 Kirkstall Abbey is considered to be one of the best examples of a medieval Cistercian monastery in Britain and with over 800 years of history and development, you do have to wonder…is it haunted? Situated just outside of Leeds, Kirkstall Abbey still stands to its full height and for centuries, it offered a peaceful existence for the Cistercian monks who lived and worked there. The landscape surrounding the abbey has undergone considerable change since the time of monastic occupation, when Kirkstall was a secluded spot in a rural setting, bordered by water and woodland. In fact, until the mid-eighteenth century when rapid urbanisation began to engulf the ruins, the abbey was surrounded by countryside.

Kirkstall Abbey is a breathtaking monastic monument and one of the best-preserved examples of an abbey of its type in Britain. The Cistercian abbey was established in 1152 and its magnificent stone church, chapels and cloister remained in use for nearly 400 years.
